Illustration's unsung hero: achieving clarity through composition.


  • pay attention to what's doing what in your work
  • positive vs negative space: what's there? What isn't there?
  • borders are friends, not food
  • careful with cropping
  • diagrams are outlines, use them well
  • TEXT: working with it? Leave plenty of room. Mostly empty or calm spaces work a lot better than mud soup behind your words

You've got to have style.


  • everyone has one unique to them, if undeveloped
  • but you can have more than one in your toolbox
  • inspiration is not the same as plagiarism: don't steal someone else's style
  • the more flexible your styles are the more likely you are to score jobs
What is style?
  • personal approach/touch/method of making a piece
  • certain quirks or patterns that will typically always be there unless you actively focus on not including them
  • for me it's smooth lines and large eyes where I can emphasize emotion

Without an idea what have you got?

  • chicken or egg: concepts and elements are a self-feeding cycle
  • if your commission is for an article, draw your context from there
  • different situations call for different solutions
  • sometimes it's okay to work straightforward and simple
  • but remember without concept you just have a picture
