Illustration's unsung hero: achieving clarity through composition.
- pay attention to what's doing what in your work
- positive vs negative space: what's there? What isn't there?
- borders are friends, not food
- careful with cropping
- diagrams are outlines, use them well
- TEXT: working with it? Leave plenty of room. Mostly empty or calm spaces work a lot better than mud soup behind your words

You've got to have style.
- everyone has one unique to them, if undeveloped
- but you can have more than one in your toolbox
- inspiration is not the same as plagiarism: don't steal someone else's style
- the more flexible your styles are the more likely you are to score jobs
What is style?
- personal approach/touch/method of making a piece
- certain quirks or patterns that will typically always be there unless you actively focus on not including them
- for me it's smooth lines and large eyes where I can emphasize emotion

Without an idea what have you got?
- chicken or egg: concepts and elements are a self-feeding cycle
- if your commission is for an article, draw your context from there
- different situations call for different solutions
- sometimes it's okay to work straightforward and simple
- but remember without concept you just have a picture
